Churches in Barbados and the Synagogue

In Barbados, you can visit a whole range of historic churches, to see and admire the architecture of past centuries. For example, St. Michael's Cathedral in Bridgetown Barbados was for a long time the largest church west of the Atlantic Ocean.

St. Michael's Cathedral in Barbados

The first church stood on the premises of St. Michael's Cathedral in 1665. But this church was destroyed by the hurricane of 1780. In 1789, the today existing church was built. It was the largest church west of the Atlantic Ocean for a long period of time. The church was built, like a lot of other buildings in Barbados from local coral rock (limestone).

St. John Parish Church in Barbados

St. John Parish Church was built in 1836. The pulpit was added later in 1876. The St. John Parish Church is a classic Gothic construction.
On the premises of St. John Parish Church Barbados some persons of high standing are buried. Among them is Prime Minister Hon David John Howard Thompson, who unexpectedly died in 2010 during his mandate.

St. Mary`s Church in Barbados

The St. Mary's Church is located in the heart of Barbados' capital Bridgetown. This church is fully-built of brick and has as one of the few churches survived the great hurricane of 1831.

St. James Parish Church in Barbados

The St. James Parish Church is one of the oldest churches on the Caribbean island of Barbados. The church was constructed of wood in 1628 and in 1680 rebuilt from local coral rock.

Jewish Synagogue in Barbados

The restored Jewish synagogue in Barbados is a museum where you can see many important exhibits. Jewish settlers who fled from Brazil, brought the windmill technology to Barbados. This technology has made the sugar cane production on the Caribbean island of Barbados highly profitable.
