Culture and architecture in Barbados
In Barbados you will find lots of architecture from the British colonial period. Among them are stately plantation mansions and Chattel Houses, the last one were intended for slaves.
There are several well-preserved and restored plantation houses and villas on the Caribbean island of Barbados. These buildings contain not only a lot of history from the outside, the interior of these buildings is usually even more beautiful and contains a lot of history. At this places you can see how great land owner and rich businessman formerly lived on the Caribbean island of Barbados and other Caribbean islands.
George Washington House Barbados
The George Washington House in Barbados is named after the former president of the United States of America. In 1751 George Washington spent about 2 months in Barbados and it is the only house outside the U.S. where George Washington stayed.
The property: The George Washington House Barbados was restored in 2006 and is now open for public visitors. The tour begins with a short film and starts at the ground floor of the George Washington House. This house is very nicely furnished and the style is equal to the style of stately homes at the time of George Washingtons stay.

The Barbados Parliament Building
The Parliament in Barbados is in operation since 1639. That makes it to one of the 3 oldest parliaments in the British Commonwealth. The Parliament building in Bridgetown was built from local coral stone.

St. Nicholas Abbey Barbados
St. Nicholas Abbey is a sugar cane plantation, with a stately main house which is beautifully restored. Around the house there are beautiful gardens (you will find pictures and more information on the website of St. Nicholas Abbey Barbados). You can buy rum of St. Nicholas Abbey directly at the abbey. If you want to, even with a personal dedication or your own name on it.

Codrington College Barbados
The story: The Codrington College in Barbados was founded in 1702 by Christopher Codrington (1668-1710). After his death, Christopher Codrington bequeathed his College to a religious community. Only the south wing of the originally four planned wings was realized. Today the college is used among others by the University of the West Indies. It contains the oldest seminary of the western hemisphere.
The property: The main access road is an alley which consists of majestic cabbage palms. The college has a nice park with a small lake and you will find a natural trail in the back end. You can visit the chapel of the college, the hall and outside areas of the estate.
